  97. OVERVIEW
  98. ********
  99. By using ERS32, Win95 system files are backed-up and 
  100. you are able to restore them (including the Windows Registry).
  101. ERS32 has proven to be an excellent and reliable backup and restore program.
  102.  
  103. The program was implemented when it was found that Win95 backup program ERU,CFGBCK, 
  104. and when says it will restore from backup were less than 100% reliable.
  105. The ERS Backup is done from the Windows environment, but restore must to be done from the  
  106. Command prompt Only(so called DOS outside Windows)
  107.  
  108. (which is generally all that one can manage to get to when a really serious
  109.  crash has occurred).
  110. The files that ERS32 creates backups from are:
  111.

  114. ╖        System.da0
  115. ╖        User.dat
  116. ╖        User.da0
  117. ╖        System.ini
  118. ╖        Win.ini
  119. ╖        Command.com (from the Windows directory)

  126. Multiuser support:
  127. If you have Profiles, each Profile"s User.dat and User.da0 are backed up, 
  128. no need to re-install if you changed profiles, ERS32 automatically will detect new profiles.

  130. The original ERS program proved to be an excellent backup and restore
  131. utility, and now it's here in a 32 bit version.
  132.  
  133. special features : Autonotice and Automated Backup

  135. Installation:
  136. *************
  137. Extract ers32.zip and select install (from WinZip) or extract to a temporary folder
  138. and double click setup.exe.
  139.  
  140. Note: If you're running out of room on your "C" drive, you can select to
  141. install ERS32 to any other hard drive you may have in your system.
  142.  
  143. Also if you have a Computer like NEC PC9821 which the boot drive is A,
  144. ERS32 will install in that directory.
  145.  
  146. ERS32 1.4 and later are programmed with Visual Basic 5.0 so setup 
  147. will update your system to VB5, the update is necessary because most
  148.  
  149. newer programs will require you to update to VB5, since VB5 is in it's early stage
  150. we included the update with ERS32.
  151. VB5 is absolutely safe and doesn't have any bugs what so ever.
  152.  
  153. If you have problems installing or running ERS32 you might need 
  154. the OLE2Upadte from Microsoft,also available from our website.

  157. Uninstalling:
  158. *************
  159. To Uninstall ERS32:
  160.  
  161.     Before uninstalling be shure that the " Use Autonotice " in the menu is
  162.     unchecked ,this way you won't have to remove the shortcut to ERSAuto.exe
  163.     from the startupfolder manually.
  164.     
  165.     If you are uninstalling to install an update of ERS32,go to Control Panel.
  166.     Click add/remove programs,hi-light Emergency Recovery System 32 
  167.     from the list and click Uninstall.
  168.     When installing an update be shure to install ERS32 into the same directory 
  169.     as before.

  171. After installation you will be able to use you old backups.    
  172.     
  173.  
  174.     If you want to remove ERS32 completly read the note first.
  175.  
  176. Note :     Uninstalling ERS32 will not delete the backups you made, 
  177.     delete them from ERS32 first or you will have to delete them manually.

  179. Backup
  180. *******
  181. ERS can be found within the "Start Menu" listings under "Programs" or you
  182. can create a shortcut for your desktop in the usual way. 
  183.  
  184. Click on one of the "SLOTS" push buttons to backup in the slot of your choice
  185. At this point you can add a remark to your backup such as : "Before I installed program X".
  186. The remark will help you to select the correct backup in case you want to restore.
  187. Click OK to add the remark you typed.
  188. If you click cancel or didn't type a remark a standard :"Contains backup" will be added as
  189.  
  190. remark. 
  191. Slot 1 is ERS1 , Slot 2 is ERS2, Slot 3 is ERS3. 
  192. Slots are simply folders named 1, 2 and 3 which will be created in the ERS32
  193. directory on your hard drive.
  194. This where the three independent backups will be stored, but keep in mind that each backup 
  195. can take up several megabytes of disk space.
  196. Slot Auto is an additional backup, see additional features.
  197.  
  198. I myself keep more than one backup at all times, and I always keep it up-to-date.
  199.  
  200. Remember, when you do a restore, it will restore to the same
  201. settings that you had when you did that last backup, so if you didn't
  202.  
  203. backup after making successful changes to your system, those changes will
  204. not be recovered.  Only those changes made before the most recent backup
  205. are recoverable.

  207. Restore from backups:
  208. *********************
  209. With ERS32, you'll have up to three backups from which to do your restore
  210. , an additional backup if you use scheduled backup using Automated backup.  
  211.   
  212. Restart your computer, push F8 on the keyboard when the screen says
  213. "Starting Windows 95", and select the option "Command Prompt Only" from
  214. the menu.
  215.  
  216. If you want to check the creation dates or any remarks you added to the backups,
  217. type : ERSINFO
  218.  
  219. To restore just type  ERS1 ,ERS2 , ERS3 or ERSAUTO at the command prompt
  220.  
  221. depending  upon which backup you want to initiate the restoration from.
  222. Type "Y" to continue,"N" to exit without restoring the backup.
  223.  
  224. After restoration, press ctrl+alt+del to restart computer, 
  225. Windows 95 should operate once again.
  226.  
  227. Explanations of many MS-DOS modes in Win95:
  228. ****************************
  229.  
  230. There could be up to four instances of MS-DOS in Win95.
  231. In case of a clean Windows' 95 install there are only three.
  232. only one works with ERS and ERS32 and that is this one:
  233.  
  234. ╖    Start your computer and select F8 when says "Starting Win95"
  235.     from the menu you must select:
  236.  
  237.      "Command Prompt only", that is MSDOS Stand alone, 
  238.     Win95 is completely out of the picture here.
  239.     (this is the one to select to restore system files)
  240.     
  241.  
  242. The ones not to use:
  243.  
  244. ╖    MSDOS inside windows called MSDOS Prompt. (don't use this one)
  245.  
  246.         
  247.  
  248. ╖    MSDOS mode outside Windows, is the one that when you Shut down windows and 
  249.     select Exit to MS DOS.(Still controlled by Win95)
  250.     (don't use this one)
  251.  
  252. ╖    When you start your computer and select F8 when says "Starting Win95"
  253.     from the menu you can select:
  254.  
  255.      "Previous version of MS-DOS" if you installed Win95 on top DOS6.22 or
  256.      then you will have option in the menu to select.(don't use this one )

  259. Troubleshooting:
  260. ***************
  261. The program has been tested and proven to work very well.  Always read
  262. the screen while it is doing the restore.  If you get the error message:
  263. "Bad command or File name" while restoring , then manually copy the file 
  264. attrib.exe from the Windows Command directory to the C: directory.
  265.  
  266. If you get Error message "ERS32 was unable to find some systems files"
  267. Check in C:\Windows\Profiles, see if there is a folder in there that has no User.dat 
  268. or User.da0 in them.
  269. If this is the case, delete the profile name, then go to:    
  270. Control Panel\Password click the Users Profiles tab and select 
  271. "All users of this PC use same Preferences and Desktop Setting".
  272.  
  273. Note: Many computers have Profiles added as an option and users don't know that they exist, 
  274. be very careful in configuring and deleting profiles. 
  275. If you decided to delete Profiles you will have to copy missing shortcuts from Profiles 
  276. to the main StartMenu and Desktop configured without profiles.

  278. Useful Tips:
  279. *************
  280. Remember a few things:
  281.  
  282.  
  283. ╖    Print the readme1.txt and save it for a rainy day or at least
  284.     print the backup and restore section.
  285.  
  286. ╖    Always do good fresh backups, don't say I don't need these
  287.     backups because one day you will wish that you had a backup.
  288.  
  289. ╖    Always keep more than one backup and get familiarized with
  290.     this program.
  291.  
  292. ╖    When you do a restore, it will restore to the same
  293.     settings that you had when you did that last backup.
  294.  
  295. ╖    Make a backup before you install a new program.
  296.     If everything works fine afterwards,make another one.

  298. Additional features:
  299. *******************
  300. Automated Backup:
  301. In addition to autonotice , ERS32 V1.7 has a new option
  302. where you can schedule ERS32 to do one backup using System agent or any other scheduler.
  303. When setting up your scheduler select ERSauto.exe in stead of ERS32bits.exe.
  304. On execution a new folder named "Auto" will be created in the ERS directory.
  305. and a batchfile named "ersauto.bat" in the root of your startupdisk.
  306.  
  307. Don't use ERSauto.exe as a shortcut in the Startup folder.
  308. If you do not want to use a scheduler you can use Autonotice.
  309.  
  310. Autonotice:
  311. It gives you an *automatic reminder to make a backup if all your backups are older then 1 day.
  312. If you have already made a backup on that day nothing will happen.
  313. To make use of "Autonotice" select Option from the menu and click on "Use Autonotice".
  314. A shortcut for the ERSpopup.exe will be created in your startup folder.
  315. To disable Autonotice click "Use Autonotice" again.
  316.  
  317. Autonotice will be enabled the next time you start Windows.
  318.  
  319. *Note: Autonotice will not respond if all slots are empty !
